Job Description
The Park Ranger will supervise daily operations, customer service, rule enforcement and maintenance of the assigned parks. The ideal candidate will be skilled in the maintenance and operation of parks, natural resource management, rule enforcement, public programming and grounds and turf care. The candidate must have strong communication skills, the ability to safely operate heavy equipment, the ability to perform building and equipment maintenance as well as provide exceptional customer service. *Recommends and implements solutions to provide safe, clean, and aesthetically pleasing Park facilities. Our Park System has an annual attendance of over 1 million visitors.

This position will assist all park areas as directed by supervisor, with a primary reporting location of Bay Shore County Park located at 5637 Sturgeon Bay Road (Highway 57), New Franken, WI 54229 (and Brown County Fairgrounds located at 1500 Fort Howard Avenue, De Pere, WI 54115 during winter months). Bay Shore County Park is an 85-acre park situated atop the Niagara Escarpment, offers a breathtaking view of the Bay of Green Bay. Scenic hiking trails follow the ledge of the escarpment. A breakwater and boat launch facility with protected harbor are also located within Bay Shore Park. Launching ramps and docks provide access for fishing, sailing, and boating enthusiasts. The park has a nautical-themed playground with a huge wooden ship providing the backdrop for children to have a fun make-believe high-sea adventure! In addition, Bay Shore is one of 3 Brown County Parks that offers camping and boasts 107 wooded campsites making it a summer destination for many families. The Brown County Fairgrounds located along the west shore of the Fox River and is home to the annual Brown County Fair. The Fairgrounds has two large exhibition buildings, as well as several smaller barn facilities, which are rented to a variety of groups throughout the year for specialty events. In addition, it serves as public winter storage October through April allowing the Park Ranger to complete winter operations (cross-country ski trail grooming, snow removal, seasonal equipment maintenance, etc.). The Fairgrounds is one of our main shops for additional outlying parks that we maintain and operate.

Essential Duties
  • Provide exemplary customer service to all customers and actively take part in maintaining a positive customer service environment for internal and external relations.
  • Possess the ability to resolve conflict and enforce violations to the extend allowable per BC Code.
  • Ability to issue verbal and written warnings and/or citations to visitors.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills when working with co-workers and customers.
  • Implements department and County goals, objectives and policies; maintains performance standards.
  • Ensures smooth day-to-day maintenance, operations and supervise/direct the work of seasonal staff at the assigned park areas.
  • Performs preventative maintenance, troubleshoots and makes repairs on motorized equipment, machinery, buildings/HVAC systems and other park facilities.
  • Operates trucks, tractors, mowers, chainsaws, snow removal equipment, skid steers, snow grooming equipment, firefighting equipment and other park related equipment.
  • Prepares monthly and special reports as required.
  • Develop and monitor LTE/Seasonal staff schedules and duties.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ideal candidate will be a quick and independent learner, and able to adapt to new tasks.
  • Knowledge of principles, techniques and practices related to public recreation and parks maintenance during summer and winter.
  • Knowledge and past experience with conducting environmental education.
  • Knowledge of basic mechanical operations.
  • Knowledge of basic plumbing, carpentry and electrical operations (construction).
  • Knowledge of equipment used in park operations.
  • Ability to operate all mechanical equipment, lighting systems, plumbing systems, irrigation/water systems, hand tools, tractors, UTVs, snowmobiles, all types of vehicles, grass cutting equipment and backhoes.
  • Ability to perform park inspections, including grounds, buildings and equipment to ensure compliance with established standards, regulations and laws.
  • Must have exceptionally strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to speak in public regarding a variety of program topics.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the workplace.
  • Knowledge of chemicals, pesticides, herbicides and cleaning products.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, other departments, and the general public.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
  • Associates degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in, Forestry, Biology or Natural Resource Management, Environmental Education or equivalent experience related to this job description.
Licenses or Certifications:
  • Must possess or be able to possess a Wisconsin Commercial Driver's License within 1 year of employment; CPR and 1st aid certification or the ability to obtain.

Salary/Salary Range
$23.21, and upon successful completion of the initial 6-month period, the base wage will increase to $24.02 per hour. Differential pay for nights and weekends worked.
