Rec. Walk / Run

Two Rivers Parks & Recreation Department

In an effort to improve the lifestyle of the citizens of our community the Two Rivers Parks & Recreation Department began a Rec. Walk / Run once a month in October of 2007.   The idea was simple:  offer an opportunity for all ages to exercise that was fun, affordable and easy to do.

Our goal was to get families off the couch, participate in an exercise program that was not competitive, have fun, meet new people, visit a part of our community that may not be part of their usual routine, strengthen family connections and to offer the program at an affordable price.

A theme is picked for each walk, a tee-shirt is designed and a route is determined.   The location of the route varies from our trails, to our parks, to schools and our J. E. Hamilton Community House. Pre registration is required for anyone wanting a tee-shirt.   Anyone not purchasing the tee-shirt may join the walk at no cost.

To date there have been 15 Rec. Walk / Runs, with 294 different participants with a total of 820 people attending the walks.  Several people have not missed a walk.   Comments are always favorable, and participants have begun offering suggestions for themes, locations, shirt designs and colors.    Grandchildren in strollers are in attendance at every walk.  Pets are always welcomed.

We knew we made a difference when several times participants who had their plans change at the last minute and missed the walk, stopped to say they walked their own route. They are now finding ways to get out and exercise.

The Two Rivers Parks & Recreation Department was pleased to be awarded the Benefit Award for 2008.   We feel strongly that this program is a great addition to our community.  The program offers countless benefits in the 4 major areas of Parks and Recreation; health, social, economic and environmental.

Proclamation

Recognizing the Benefits of Parks and Recreation

Whereas, parks and recreation activities enhance the physical health and mental well-being of individuals, work forces, and communities; and

Whereas, participation in recreation programs builds self-esteem and provides positive and constructive alternatives to anti-social behavior; and

Whereas, parks and recreation opportunities and open space enhance the desirability of communities as locations for business, industry and residential housing; and

Whereas, parks and recreation stimulates tourism revenues and the economic development of communities; and

Whereas, parks and open space are vital to the appearance and livability of communities, protect our air and water, and balance our ecosystem; and

Whereas, it is the right of everyone regardless of age, race, color, religion, gender, national origin or ability to participate in parks and recreation programs and activities and enjoy parks and open space.

Now, therefore, be it resolved that all citizens of this community join with citizens of other communities throughout this great state in recognizing that parks and recreation services are essential to the quality of life not only in July during "July Is Parks and Recreation Month," but all through the year as well.
